Prof Yu’s field trip to Dodong Seowon and Inheung Village with blind people

Professor Yu Heung Jun from Myeongji University left on a field trip to explore some historic sites in Daegu with blind people last Sep.

They visited Dodong Seowon and Inheung Village.

Dodong Seowon

Seowon is a Korean word for ‘old auditorium’.
Dodong Seowon is one of the 5 auditoriums in Choseon dynasty.

It is in a really great location by the river and mountain and the view is fantastic.
It was once destroyed by Imjinwaeran war in 1568 but was rebuilt in 1605.

It preserves plenty of important historic data.

400 year old huge Maidenhair tree overshadowed the garden of Dodong Seowon.
The firth of this tree is 8m.

What is remarkable is Korea’s treasure No. 350 – the auditorium, the shrine and the mud wall.

Inheung Village (Nampyeong Mun family residing place for generations)

Inheung Village was built in 19c by Mun Kyeong Ho who was a descendant of loyal subject in Korea dynasty, Mun Ik Jum.

The architectures of Inheung Village are great examples of modern Korean traditional housing (Hanok).
Korea’s most famous principle in the selection of residential place is 배산임수 literally meaning that the ideal house is built with a mountain in the back and a river in the front.
Hanoks in Inheung Village are well qualified for this principle.

During the trip, I thought it was amazing that blind people were using their sensitive tactile sensation making their own figurations with the architectures and other objects.
